Canton Messy Church is a new way of being church that was first proposed in early 2014 by some members of our community as a potential vehicle for serving our community more. The main idea of Messy Church is to give to the people who live locally a format that is different and more accessible and suitable for modern lifestyles and modern pressures. At the heart of this is an acknowledgement that our traditional forms of worship can be inaccessible to many individuals and families.
The different congregations of our Benefice were invited to come together and support this new initiative and, so far, the amount of interest and enthusiasm has been overwhelming. There is a real commitment to make this work from within the community.
Practically, the meetings will be informal, family friendly, relaxed and with no long term pressures or commitments expected. We will meet once a month on a Sunday between 4-6 pm, initially in the church of St John the Evangelist, with a view to expanding this to the other Churches as it grows and develops.
The central theology of Messy Church is to be a place of welcome for all ages, to offer a religious theme, rooted in gospel values that is open and accessible to everyone. Finally, it is an opportunity to build community and build up a community care for our neighbours.
